The complete guide to barcode labels that never fade.
Labels that fade, smudge or jam cost time and money. This guide explains print methods, resolution, label layouts and ribbon types so every label scans first time.

Direct thermal or thermal transfer?
Every barcode label printer uses one of two print methods – and the choice decides how long your labels last.
Direct thermal
Heat darkens special paper directly. No ribbon, lowest running cost.
- Shipping and courier labels
- Receipts and short-life labels
- Fades with heat and sunlight over time
Thermal transfer
A ribbon melts ink onto the label for durable, smudge-resistant prints.
- Product, shelf and asset labels
- Long life, resistant to heat and abrasion
- Works with paper and synthetic labels
BlackCopper 4-inch label printers support both methods – start with direct thermal and switch to ribbons whenever you need durability.
203 or 300 dpi?
The standard for shipping labels, product barcodes and shelf tags. Fast and economical.
203 dpi printers ›Sharper text and very small barcodes – jewellery tags, electronics and pharmacy labels.
300 dpi printers ›Choose how it connects.
Pick the label roll.
Labels are sold by size, layout and core. Match all three to your printer and application.
Core size: desktop printers use 1" or 1.5" cores; 3" cores fit industrial printers and rewinders.
Match the ribbon to the label.
Width rule: choose a ribbon slightly wider than the label, but never wider than the printhead.
Questions, answered.
Can I use other brands of labels in BlackCopper printers?
Yes. BlackCopper printers accept standard label rolls within their width and core limits, and BlackCopper labels fit most major printer brands.
Which languages do the printers support?
BlackCopper label printers support TSPL and ZPL emulation, so they work with common labelling software and ERP systems.
Why are my labels fading?
Direct thermal labels fade with heat and sunlight. For long-life labels, switch to thermal transfer labels with a wax-resin or resin ribbon.
